Retaining Walls
Retaining walls are often found in places where extra support is needed to prevent the earth from moving downhill with erosion.

Some other benefits include creating more usable space through terracing and improved drainage. It is standard practice to use 12 inches of drainage rock behind the wall.
The four most important elements to the longevity of your wall include:
Compaction of the sub base
Placing base material that's compacted and leveled
First course of block leveled individually front to back and side to side
Drainage zone behind the wall is a minimum of 12 inches
We use 3/4 inch angular free draining stone that consists of granite or limestone. We prefer to use between 18 - 24 inches of drainage rock behind the wall and a 6 – 8 inch compacted level base as added security to ensure our walls longevity for many years to come.
Bushes and shrubs are okay on top of a retaining wall. Trees with a deeper root system are not!
Concrete block retaining walls are very durable and come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. These can last over a century and require very little maintenance.
A retaining wall with a surcharge and or over 4 feet in height should incorporate the use of Geo Grid for added strength. This will classify the retaining wall as being reinforced.
Treated timbers are more cost effective but don’t carry the same longevity as concrete blocks or natural rocks and boulders. Timber walls 4 feet or higher should be tied to the hill side with dead men anchors.
Paving Stones
Adding concrete paving stones to your landscape adds great character and value.
Most commonly, the term pavers refers to stones made from concrete. These are generally small pieces made from various sizes with various colors, textures and patterns. Because of the many joints in an interlocking paver system, the pavers themselves are very strong and not prone to cracking. Although paver patios cost more than other alternatives initially, the ongoing maintenance of stamped concrete will cost more than a paver patio over time.
Its important to remember that winter weather can affect your patio. In the winter when the moisture in the ground freezes and thaws, the ground expands and contracts. As the ground shifts slightly so can your patio. This can lead to cracks in solid surfaces like concrete. With a paver patio and how it is installed piece by piece, there are more seems across the surface allowing the pavers to individually flex and settle back to the original position.
The possibilities are endless with color scheme, style of pavers and shape of desired surface. We will work with you to design beautiful and functional paved surface areas for patios, walkways and driveways. We take great care to ensure both the proper material and depth of crushed base is used and compacted to create a solid smooth surface for many years to come.
